Product registrations become email subscribers through three steps:

1. An optional, unticked marketing opt-in on the registration form.

2. A stored record of that consent.

3. An automatic sync of opted-in contacts to your email tool.

Once **product registration marketing consent** is set up correctly on the form, each warranty sign-up can also add someone to a list you can legally email.

This guide starts at the point where registrations already arrive. For the scan, form and setup itself, see the [QR code warranty registration guide](https://www.dyrect.co/blog/qr-code-warranty-registration-setup).

**TL;DR**

> - Warranty registration and marketing need two separate permissions.
>
> - Add an optional, unticked opt-in to your registration form, store when and how each person agreed, and then sync opted-in registrants to Klaviyo, eSputnik or your CRM.
>
> - [Dyrect](https://www.dyrect.co/product/product-registration-software) runs all three inside one registration flow, so Amazon and retail buyers become subscribers you own.

## Does Warranty Registration Give You Permission to Send Marketing Emails?

![Warranty registration clipboard, consent checkbox, unlocked padlock, and promotional email envelope graphic.](https://prod.superblogcdn.com/site_cuid_cl3wwffwg1088071kpbry8hfjzp/images/721def53-44ab-4fd8-89aa-3deeebc269cb-1792494626767-compressed.png)

Warranty registration gives you permission to run the warranty, while marketing emails need a permission of their own. Under GDPR, sending a warranty card or a coverage reminder relies on the warranty itself. Promotional emails, by contrast, need either explicit consent or the narrow "soft opt-in" exception, so the two purposes stay apart from the first screen.

Here is how the two purposes split:

Purpose

Example messages

Legal basis

Who receives it

**Warranty admin**

Digital warranty card, coverage reminder, safety recall

Running the warranty

All registrants

**Marketing**

New products, accessories, offers, newsletters

Consent or soft opt-in

Opted-in registrants

The soft opt-in sounds like a shortcut, although its conditions are strict. The [UK ICO's guidance](https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/guide-to-pecr/guidance-on-direct-marketing-using-electronic-mail/what-are-the-rules-on-direct-marketing-using-electronic-mail) allows it when you collected someone's details during a sale, or negotiations for a sale, of your own products. You also have to offer a simple opt-out at that moment and in every email after.

Marketplace and retail buyers usually sit outside that rule. Their purchase happened on Amazon or in a store, and their details reach you weeks later through registration. As a result, explicit consent at registration is the safer route for them.

Soft opt-in may apply, and explicit consent works too

## How to Word Product Registration Marketing Consent on Your Form

![Marketing consent form with highlighted checkbox, cursor, and blue compliance shield icon.](https://prod.superblogcdn.com/site_cuid_cl3wwffwg1088071kpbry8hfjzp/images/6f1ddb93-9044-4db1-9233-251faf7e5b29-1792494790635-compressed.png)

[Product registration](https://www.neurowarranty.com/blog/best-product-registration-software) marketing consent holds up when the checkbox is optional, starts unticked, sits apart from the warranty terms and names the channels you plan to use. The customer has to tick the box themselves. The label should say clearly which messages they will receive and from whom.

Five rules cover the design:

1. **Start unticked.** The [EU Court of Justice ruled in Planet49](https://curia.europa.eu/juris/liste.jsf?num=C-673/17) that pre-ticked boxes produce invalid consent.

2. **Keep it optional.** Registration and the digital warranty card work the same way for customers who skip the box.

3. **Separate each channel.** Email, SMS and WhatsApp each get their own box when you plan to use all three.

4. **Describe the messages.** "Product tips, new releases and offers" tells the customer far more than "updates."

5. **Make leaving easy.** Withdrawing consent should take one click, the same effort as giving it.

On top of that, [GDPR Article 7(1)](https://www.cookiebot.com/en/gdpr-consent-form/) expects you to prove consent later. For each contact, store the date, the exact checkbox wording and the page where the person agreed.

**Copy-ready checkbox labels:**

Use case

Label text

Email

"Send me product tips, new releases and offers from \[Brand\] by email. Unsubscribe anytime."

SMS

"Text me product news and offers from \[Brand\]. Reply STOP to leave."

WhatsApp

"Send me offers and product news from \[Brand\] on WhatsApp. Reply STOP to leave."

**Swap weak wording for compliant wording:**

Swap this

For this

"I agree to the terms and to receive marketing"

Two separate boxes, one for each purpose

"Keep me updated"

"Send me product tips and offers by email"

Box ticked by default

Box starts empty

"Register to get offers" as the page headline

"Register for your digital warranty card", plus an optional offers box

> **How this works in Dyrect:** The form builder adds optional email and SMS opt-in fields to the registration page, kept apart from the warranty fields. Each registration then saves the customer's consent status next to their product, serial number and purchase channel.

## How Product Registrations Reach Klaviyo or Your CRM

![Product registration records move through synchronization layers into a customer relationship dashboard.](https://prod.superblogcdn.com/site_cuid_cl3wwffwg1088071kpbry8hfjzp/images/cb3f44b8-e656-4fbd-ab76-be00111c5102-1792495101682-compressed.png)

Registration data reaches your email tool through one of four methods:

- a native integration

- a webhook

- an API

- a CSV export

Native integrations and webhooks send each opted-in contact as soon as they register, while CSV files move contacts in batches. Choose based on how quickly the welcome email should arrive and how much developer time you have.

Method

How it works

Speed

Setup effort

Best for

**Native integration**

Connect the two accounts once, and contacts flow automatically

Real time

Low

Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Omnisend, HubSpot

**Webhook**

Each new registration is posted to a web address your tool listens on

Real time

Medium, one-time

eSputnik and tools without a ready-made connector

**REST API**

Your system pulls or pushes registration data on its own schedule

Real time or scheduled

Higher, needs a developer

Custom CRMs and data warehouses

**CSV export**

Download a file, then import it into your tool

Batch

Low, though manual

Testing, small volumes, one-off moves

Next, decide which fields travel with each contact:

- Name

- Email or phone number

- Product and SKU

- Purchase channel (Amazon, retail, website)

- Registration date

- Marketing consent status

Product and channel fields matter most for segmentation. For example, they let you send drill owners accessory emails for drills, and they keep Amazon buyers in a separate segment from your website buyers.

> **How this works in Dyrect:** Dyrect sends registration data to Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Omnisend, HubSpot and more through [ready-made integrations](https://www.dyrect.co/integrations). It reaches tools such as eSputnik through webhooks, the REST API or CSV. Opted-in registrants go to your marketing lists, and the full ownership record stays in Dyrect for warranty use.

## Does GDPR Require Customer Data to Stay in the EU?

![European data storage depicted by blue globe, EU stars, and location marker.](https://prod.superblogcdn.com/site_cuid_cl3wwffwg1088071kpbry8hfjzp/images/1b2c7b07-f13f-4be7-9f3d-ae83150cacec-1792495246640-compressed.png)

GDPR sets rules for moving personal data outside the EU, rather than rules about where servers sit. Storing registration data in the US or elsewhere is lawful when a valid transfer mechanism covers it. Even so, EU hosting helps, because it removes the transfer question entirely.

The regulation [governs transfers rather than storage location](https://complydog.com/blog/does-gdpr-require-eu-data-residency). In practice, three common routes cover EU registration data:

Route

What it means

**EU data storage**

Data stays inside the EU, so no transfer happens

**EU-US Data Privacy Framework**

Transfers to US companies certified under the framework

**Standard Contractual Clauses**

Contract terms that protect data sent to other countries

The EU-US Data Privacy Framework passed its first court test in September 2025, and [an appeal now sits with the EU Court of Justice](https://www.wilmerhale.com/insights/blogs/wilmerhale-privacy-and-cybersecurity-law/20251201-european-court-of-justice-to-review-challenge-to-eu-us-data-privacy-framework). For brands with large EU sales, EU storage therefore keeps registrations unaffected by whatever that appeal decides.

Agencies and enterprise buyers also write hosting terms into contracts. Before launch, ask your registration tool where it stores data and which mechanism covers any transfers.

## Which Emails to Send After Someone Registers

Send a warranty confirmation to every registrant right away, and then a short welcome sequence to those who opted in. [Klaviyo's research](https://community.klaviyo.com/marketing-30/how-do-i-set-up-a-welcome-series-flow-in-klaviyo-19143) across its customers finds three welcome emails perform best: one immediately, one two days later and one after four days.

Product owners want setup help first, so lead with useful content and save offers for later in the sequence.

Timing

Email

Goal

Who receives it

Day 0

Digital warranty card with coverage dates

Confirm the registration

All registrants

Day 0 (Germany)

Double opt-in confirmation

Confirm consent

Opted-in German registrants

Day 2

Day 6

Day 14

Neutral review request

Opted-in

Day 45

Opted-in

Service emails such as the warranty card and coverage reminders must stay free of promotions. Adding an offer turns a service email into marketing, which then needs consent.

Germany also adds a step. German courts treat double opt-in as the reliable proof of consent, and [the confirmation email must stay free of advertising](https://www.dr-datenschutz.de/werbung-in-double-opt-in-bestaetigungsmail-unzulaessig/), including slogans.

> **How this works in Dyrect:** Right after registration, Dyrect sends a branded [digital warranty card](https://www.dyrect.co/features) by email or SMS. Each contact synced to your email tool carries the registered product, so welcome flows can branch by product line from day one.

## How to Ask for Reviews After Registration Within Amazon's Rules

![Amazon review guidelines illustrated by smartphone, star rating, and approved versus prohibited paths.](https://prod.superblogcdn.com/site_cuid_cl3wwffwg1088071kpbry8hfjzp/images/cd2584ae-bd7d-43bf-97b2-d4be3c52e11f-1792495369579-compressed.png)

Review requests after registration stay compliant when three things hold:

- the wording is neutral

- there is zero incentive

- the request is kept apart from the warranty

[Amazon's review rules](https://junglescout.com/blog/amazon-product-packaging-inserts) prohibit rewards for reviews and requests aimed at positive ratings. They also prohibit [steering unhappy buyers toward the seller](https://www.supplykick.com/blog/amazon-product-inserts-guide) instead of a review.

Registration still creates a good moment to ask, because the buyer has the product in hand and has already chosen to hear from you.

Risky wording

Compliant wording

"Loved it? Leave us 5 stars"

"Share your honest review to help other shoppers"

"Review us and get 10% off"

A review request with zero reward attached

"Unhappy? Contact us first," placed before the review link

Support details in the warranty email, and the review request in its own email

"Review to activate your warranty"

Warranty confirmed at registration, with the review requested separately

Amazon updates its policies regularly, so check the current rules in Seller Central before sending.

## Real Example: An Amazon-First Power Tools Brand Building Its Email List

One European power tools brand sells most of its products on Amazon and came to Dyrect with a clear goal:

> "Today ~90% of our sales go through Amazon (marketplace.es), and our key goal is to legally capture customer emails post-purchase…"
>
> \- _Founder, European power tools brand_

Here is the setup Dyrect proposed:

1. **QR insert in every box**, opening a standalone registration page embedded as an iframe on the brand's landing page, with no Shopify store needed.

2. **Free extended warranty** as the reason to register, applied automatically when the form is submitted.

3. **Optional, unticked marketing opt-in** placed beside the warranty fields.

4. **Webhook sync** sending each opted-in contact's name, email and product to Klaviyo or eSputnik.

5. **Welcome flow split by product**, so drill buyers and garden equipment buyers receive different setup tips.

6. **Enterprise plan** sized for 500 to 3,000 registrations a month.

As a result, every opted-in registrant arrives in the email tool with a product tag and a consent record, ready for the welcome flow. Similarly, luggage brand Briggs & Riley grew its email and phone subscribers by 30% after moving registration to Dyrect, as covered in [Dyrect's case studies](https://www.dyrect.co/case-studies).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is a pre-ticked opt-in box allowed?

Pre-ticked boxes fail GDPR's consent test. The EU Court of Justice ruled in Planet49 that consent requires an active choice, so the box has to start empty and the customer has to tick it themselves. Registrations collected through pre-ticked boxes still give you warranty data, although they carry zero valid marketing consent.

### Can you add past registrants to your marketing list?

Past registrants who ticked a valid opt-in can join your list right away. For everyone else, an email asking for consent counts as marketing in itself: the UK regulator penalised Honda over [289,790 such emails](https://kantara.atlassian.net/wiki/download/attachments/3506718/GDPR-Consent%20Whitepaper-Forms.pdf?api=v2). Instead, offer the opt-in where these customers already interact with you, such as the customer portal.

### How fast do product registrations sync to your email tool?

With a native integration or a webhook, each opted-in registrant reaches your email tool within moments of submitting the form. The welcome email can therefore arrive while the product is still on the table. CSV exports, by contrast, move contacts in batches on the schedule your team imports them.

### Can customers unsubscribe without losing their warranty?

Yes. Marketing consent and warranty coverage are separate, so unsubscribing leaves the warranty, the digital warranty card and coverage reminders fully active. GDPR also requires withdrawal to be as easy as giving consent, so place a one-click unsubscribe link in every marketing email.

### Can you message registrants on WhatsApp?

Yes, with a WhatsApp-specific opt-in. [Meta's policy accepts a general marketing opt-in](https://www.cm.com/blog/whatsapp-updates-opt-in-and-quality-rating-policy/) since November 2024. However, GDPR-valid consent for EU customers should name WhatsApp as a channel, so give WhatsApp its own checkbox on the registration form.

### Do registrants in Germany need double opt-in?

Double opt-in is the safe standard for German registrants. Courts there treat it as reliable proof of consent, and the confirmation email must stay free of advertising, including brand slogans. Send the confirmation right after registration, and add the contact to marketing lists once they click the link.

### Can you send warranty emails to registrants who skipped the marketing box?

Yes. Warranty confirmations, coverage reminders and safety notices are service messages tied to the warranty, so every registrant can receive them. Keep these emails free of offers and product promotions, because promotional content turns a service email into marketing.

### How long does marketing consent from a registration last?

GDPR leaves the duration open, and consent stays valid until the person withdraws it or it goes stale. Regulators expect brands to refresh consent after long periods of silence. A practical rhythm is to review inactive subscribers once a year and remove those who show zero engagement.

### Can Amazon buyers who register join your email list?

Yes, when they opt in on your own registration page. Amazon keeps buyer emails private, so registration is the moment the buyer shares contact details with you directly. Keep the Amazon insert focused on warranty registration, and place the marketing opt-in on the registration page itself.

_This guide shares general information about GDPR, PECR and marketplace rules. Confirm your final wording and setup with a legal advisor in each market you sell in._
